Abrasive products aimed at composites industry

January 10, 2001

Norton Company (Worcester, MA) has introduced a new line of abrasives and accessories for the composites industry that are said to offer faster cut rates and better durability than competing products.

Random orbital sanding paper disks are classified as lightweight (B and C) and heavyweight (E and F). B and C weight disks are designed for all surface finishing and repair applications, such as removal of imperfections from uncoated parts and primer parts, repair of painted parts, and repair of gel-coated parts. Disks feature a premium P-graded heat-treated aluminum oxide abrasive that Norton says provides a quick, cool cut rate with extended life.

The heavier backings of E and F weight disks provide a fast aggressive cut, durability and reduced edge wear. Heavyweight disks are available with ceramic alumina, zirconia alumina, and aluminum oxide abrasives.

Norton also is offering three types of random orbital sanding cloth disks for applications requiring maximum backing strength, resistance to tear, and reduced edge wear. Ceramic alumina, zirconia alumina, and aluminum oxide disks are designed for removal of flash and seams from molded parts. Heavy-duty Y- and X-weight cotton backings are said to increase durability and reduce edge wear.

Norton has also produced a new line of surface finishing products. Bear-Tex SCF surface grinding disks and belts are designed for a variety of electric and air powered tools used to remove surface defects, remove light edge burrs, parting lines or flashing; cleaning molds; and blending mill marks, tool marks, or uneven edges. The gentle action of the flexible pads allows for easy removal of flashing or burrs without affecting dimension of workplace.

New accessories include Stick and Sand, Speed-Lok TR, and Speed-Grip disk backup pads; Soft Foam Interface pads; and Disk and Half Moon hand pads.
