FIREX Multi-Layer Coating
FIREX™ was developed by GUHRING in conjunction with Platit of Switzerland, and is comprised of distinct alternating ultra-thin hard coating layers. FIREX™ combines the universal applicability and good adhesion characteristics of Titanium Nitride (TiN); the superior heat resistance of Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN); and the ability to absorb cracking of Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN). The end result are significant gains in tool life and productivity. For example:
- A38 steel plate: A FIREX™-coated tap averages 250 holes per tool vs. just 50 holes for the TiN-coated tap it replaced.
- Compacted graphite: A FIREX™-coated coolant-fed carbide drill averages 20,000 holes per grind vs. 12,000 holes for the TiN-coated drill it replaced.
- 6A14V Titanium: A FIREX™-coated drill averages 60 holes per grind vs. just 30 for the TiN-coated drill and 10 for the bright finish drill it replaced.
Widespread application of FIREX™ is made possible through the addition of a new, state-of-the-art Platit® coating system, which uses an advanced cathodic arc process to produce a smoother outer-coating layer compared to that of conventionally applied arc coatings. The end result are coatings that exhibit better-cutting and chip evacuation characteristics.
The new Platit® system can quickly and cost-effectively apply any and all of GUHRING's advanced coatings, including FIREX™ (F-coat), TiN (S-coat), TiAlN (A-coat), TiCN (C-coat).
