In milling of 17-4 precipitation-hardening stainless steel using a 0.5-in.-dia., three-flute endmill at identical speeds and feeds, for example, the Tylon-coated mill had double the life of a TiCN-coated tool (600 vs. 300 linear inches).

The coatings are said to be harder than TiN or TiCN and have higher maximum working temperatures. They can be used wet or dry in tough milling applications such as cast irons and stainless steels, nickel-base alloys, titanium alloys, and hardened workpieces.
