Sumitomo Electric Carbide, Inc.from Sumitomo now come in sizes as large as 1.25 in. The tools are said to provide reliable and stable tool life at feedrates twice those of conventional tools.
Tool inserts feature a unique, "3-dimensional" geometry with an effective chipbreaker and PVD coating that allows high feeds while maintaining tool life. The inserts are positioned in the drill body to provide four effective cutting edges, resulting in good chip control, cutting balance, and low-shock penetration due to smooth, even contact with the workpiece. The 1.25-in.-dia. drills use inserts with a trigon geometry.
