New And Optimized Gear Skiving Function For The HAIMER Microset VIO Linear Tool Presetter

It is extremely important in the gear skiving setup process to find the absolute center of the skiving tool. With the tool off center when cutting, it will be "pulled" along the flank of the gear being machined, and the shape and size of the gear may change unexpectedly.

Achieving accurate synchronization between the tool and the gear is of utmost importance to generate the perfect shape. If the shape and size is off, it could become scrap material and not a good part. Nowadays machine shops run the entire gear skiving process on one machine, if it is equipped with the equivalent technology package of the machine tool builder. For initial tool presetting, it is even more important to determine the correct tool coordinates.

The gear skiving option has been available since early 2016 for the HAIMER Microset VIO Linear tool presetter. Using this measuring function, specifically designed for measuring gear skiving tools, machinists are able to run tool presetting and measuring out of the machine tool and during off-production hours.

Recently HAIMER developed this option further to take work from the operator, to optimize work piece quality, and to significantly increase overall performance and productivity. HAIMER’s gear skiving option allows the user to find the correct data from the skiving tool‘s cutting edge with high repeatable accuracy and digitally transfer the tool data to the machine tool. Provided with the right options on the presetter, a measuring macro can be created to automate the process so that all operators can run the presetter and measure complex tooling like a gear skiving cutter without deeper know-how.

With this option, the optical carrier (which includes a digital camera), can be swiveled by +/- 25° to adjust to the tool’s measuring points. This feature allows machinists to preset gear skiving tools in a completely new way and allows the machine tool to keep running, which increases productivity. This special technology can certainly also measure standard tooling assemblies and then send the tool data to the machine tool. Thus, the HAIMER Microset tool presetter VIO linear is a truely inclusive machine and its versatile technology is attractive for all shops, that are gear skiving on their mill/turn machines but also for all machining shops that just need to preset their tools efficiently.
