Tool design software allows optimized flute profiles

iFlute tool design software from ANCA Inc. is said to be the first off-line interactive system for the development of optimized flute profiles and the associated manufacturing process, including the wheel radii required to generate the desired flutes.

The package integrates both forward and reverse flute design in one software package, allowing tool designers to easily determine the correct wheel cross-section and grinding move to produce the flute cross-section that will perform most effectively. The software lets users design the flute profile to incorporate a constant rake flute face, and to produce a wheel shape that will provide a constant hook within a specific flute.

The tool designer starts by defining the flute profile required. The software then calculates the wheel profile required to deliver the desired flute shape. This is known as the inverse solution. Wheel and flute profiles can also be edited to produce the optimum flute shape.

The software also allows the reverse process, where an available wheel can be selected and the forward solution calculated to show the profile the wheel will deliver. This profile can be compared in 2D and 3D to the original desired profile, and, by iterating this loop, the designer can determine the optimum combination of flute shape, wheel profile, and program parameters. Users also can preview a 3D flute-path simulation and assure tool program accuracy.

Finished wheel profiles can be exported and used in the dressing cycles on the tool grinder. ANCA says the package can be used with most brands of CNC tool grinding equipment.

One example of where the system can be valuable is in the design of flutes for profile and step tools. Typically, designers have trouble achieving the desired rake angle on the different diameters of a tool. Using the iFlute package, designers can develop a flute profile with the desired rake angle at the two required diameters, creating a controlled tool geometry that was previously very difficult to obtain.
