Tools made from Tantung alloy maintain cutting edge hardness throughout a longer tool life than HSS tooling and work at speeds of up to 450 sfpm. Tantung is composed principally of chromium, tungsten, niobium, and carbon in a cobalt matrix. These elements allow the material to retain its cutting hardness at temperatures of up to 1500F. Other attributes include high transverse rupture strength, low coefficient of friction, and excellent corrosion resistance. Tantung is suitable for a range of cutting tool applications, Including turning, facing, boring, milling, and cut-off.
