Drills, taps, and other tools for dry machining are designed to minimize cutting forces and friction, thereby generating as little heat as possible during machining. For drills, for example, this means large rake angles, narrow cylindrical lands, strong back taper, and special flute profiles that provide low-friction swarf flow.
The carbide tools feature coatings that reduce friction in the contact zones of the tool and in the flute as well as provide thermal insulation to the tool. Available hard coating materials include TiN, TiAlN, and TiCN; low-friction coatings based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tungsten carbide/carbon (WC/C) also are available.
