Westec 2000: Vacuum System Increases Twin-Spindle Lathe Productivity
A patented vacuum device from Hydromat (St. Louis, MO) increases productivity of twin-spindle lathes by allowing unloading of the right spindle while the left spindle is in operation.
The VacExtract unloading device removes workpieces through the rear of the right spindle in less than two seconds, according to Hydromat. The setup lets the left spindle keep working during the unloading cycle, maximizing cutting time and substantially boosting productivity. The system also handles larger parts easily.

The device is programmed via the lathe CNC and runs on standard shop air. When it's time to unload the part, it creates a vacuum inside the spindle bore to gently extract parts. The system has a small footprint that Hydromat says will not interfere with chip conveyors or high-pressure coolant pumps. The device's tilt-table design maintains easy access to the rear of the machine. It will work with chucks, collet chucks, or dead-length collets.
