When released, the wire seats properly in the thread and you are ready for an over the wire measurement. Internal gauges work in the opposite way. The gauge contracts allowing it to be placed inside the threads resulting in an under the wire measurement. The gauges are certified, traceable and the over the wire limits are printed right on the gauge. OVEE external gauges are available in unified sizes ranging from #0 to 14" and metric sizes from 1mm to 356mm. Internal unified gauges start at 5/16" and metrics start at 8mm.
