(Chicopee, MA – March 2002) Erwin Junker Machinery, Inc. has added a new family member to its "Tapomat" line of CNC thread grinders and redesigned the machine at the same time. Junker created the new machine to answer a market need for smaller dimension ranges and CNC controlled relief grinding. The Tapomat 1000 produces right or left hand threads from .8 – 4mm. It offers chucking lengths up to 100mm and grinding lengths up to 50mm.

The new Tapomat 1000 is compact, with no external components jutting out from the machine. The hydraulic power pack, coolant pumps and the electrical cabinet are inside the enclosure and are all flush with the machine's profile. The control system swivels in or out for operator convenience. The new Tapomat grinder has a 5 kw (6.5 hp) wheelhead spindle motor. The operator can manually angle the wheelhead with roller guides +10/ -7 degrees. The dressing device also swivels +12/-12 degrees. An encoder feedback system on both the wheelhead and the dresser ensures angle accuracy. The Tapomat may be equipped with a roll device for multi-rib thread profiles.

The workhead spindle (C-axis) is directly driven via servomotor, no belts or gears involved. Other features contributing to maximum accuracy and rigidity include X-axis glass scales, hydrostatic cylindrical guide ways for the wheel head infeed axis , hydrostatic infeed screw to eliminate any friction and back-lash in the wheelhead infeed.
