SME Seeks Nominations For Composites Manufacturing Award

DEARBORN, Mich. - The Composites Manufacturing Association of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (CMA/SME) is seeking nominations for the 2002 J. H. Hall Manufacturing Award recognizing excellence in composites manufacturing.

The J. H. "Jud" Hall Award is given annually to an individual who has contributed significantly to composites manufacturing or tooling technology through leadership, technical developments, patents, or educational activities. It recognizes excellence in the development or improvement of processes, tooling, and applications, as well as achievements in composites research, education, and technology transfer. The award celebrates innovation in solving issues related to production and applications development, and acknowledges significant contributions that reduce costs and waste streams, and improve quality and efficiency.

The 2001 award recipient is Burt Rutan, best known as the designer of the all-composite Voyager aircraft. Rutan is president and CEO of Scaled Composites, Inc., a company he founded in 1982 to develop research aircraft. He received the award at SME's Composites 2001 Manufacturing & Tooling Conference & Exhibits this past February in Orlando, Fla.
